Norden Millimeter Frequency Converter Products

Norden Millimeter has extensive experience in design and manufacturing of frequency converter products for both the commercial and military markets.  Norden understands that the vast majority of requirements for converter products involve custom design and packaging, custom LO and IF frequency selection, conversion gain and linearity requirements.  To this extent, it is difficult to develop a useful line of “standard” converter products.  Consequently, Norden recognizes that the majority of requirements for these products will be per individual customer specifications.  Regardless, Norden can deliver prototype converter products for customer evaluation in typically a few weeks after receipt of purchase order, using circuits and modules from our standard library.  Norden will work closely with our customers once a design and specifications are finalized, in order to insure that our approach provides the customer with best possible value.  In the event that larger quantities of converter products are needed, Norden will investigate the usage of MMICs and soft board construction to simplify assembly and reduce recurring costs.

Norden’s military converters are typically used in ELINT, ECM, ESM and RADAR systems that operate in a harsh environment.  Special dual channel units are available that provide phase and gain tracking between the two channels.  Norden’s commercial converters are typically used in microwave communications systems where there is a critical need for high linearity.  Whatever the customer requirement, Norden can design and deliver a frequency converter that will fulfill the specifications.

Norden’s highly integrated down converters can incorporate an LNA on the RF input port, frequency multiplication on the LO port, AGC, image rejection mixers and IF amplification.  Norden’s integrated up converters can incorporate frequency multiplication on the
LO port, power output control, output detectors, internal power amplification, and highly linear operation.  Please contact the Norden Sales Office or your
nearest Norden representative to obtain more information and discuss your requirements.

Configuration and Assembly

Norden Converter assemblies are built using high precision thin film alumina micro circuitry with PHEMT GaAs MESFET MMIC and individual silicon devices as the active components. Assemblies use both high temperature die attach and epoxy mount. Interconnection of the components is completed with either gold wire or ribbon bonding. Sample destruct testing is performed on both attachment and bonding to insure compliance to the manufacturing process.  Final assembly is within an epoxy sealed machined package (or hermetically laser sealed depending on the customer needs).

Electrical Testing and Verification

Each individual unit is tested to insure compliance to the electrical specifications over the required environmental conditions.  A burn in of the unit is completed prior to final testing and shipping to insure product integrity. A test sheet for the unit is completed verifying testing and the associated results.

Process evaluation and verification of any new design implementation is performed using a detailed environmental test matrix that stresses the new design to insure integrity.  Implementation of new active or control devices requires a minimum 1000 hours operating burn in at the maximum operating temperature of those devices.
