Norden Millimeter Custom Products and Capabilities

Norden has developed a comprehensive line of catalog products to fulfill most needs of the microwave industry and to illustrate capability.  However, we recognize that for highly specialized systems and requirements, only a custom designed product will be acceptable.  Norden has extensive experience in the design, development and manufacture of custom microwave products and subsystems, and welcomes the opportunity to discuss these requirements with our customers.  We can provide custom designed and tested amplifiers, multipliers, converters and oscillators with additional non-standard features and operation over the full military temperature range, per the customer needs.  If you have such a requirement, please contact us and we will evaluate & discuss your need and provide you with a quotation.  Norden can provide custom designed products with the following special features:

Amplifiers – Norden can provide amplifiers operating in the bands from 30 KHz up to 110 GHz, with power outputs as high as 4 Watts or more, depending on frequency and bandwidth.  We can provide amplifiers with enhanced gain flatness, improved noise figure, improved linearity, improved group delay variation, lower residual phase noise, limiting, adjustable phase and gain, positive gain slope, multi-channel, phase and gain matched, adjustable power output and improved VSWR.

Multipliers – Norden can provide units with multiplication factors of X5 and higher, non-standard bands, lower input power, higher output power, adjustable power output, low group delay variation, and low phase noise.

Converters – Norden can deliver frequency converters with improved noise figure, improved linearity, integrated up/down converters in a common package, higher power output, different conversion gain, frequency multiplication on the LO input, integrated LO, specialized packaging and multi-channel units with matched phase and gain.

Oscillators – Norden can deliver Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs), Voltage controlled DROs, free running DROs, phase locked VCOs, and phase locked DROs.  The phase locked units can be configured with either an internal or external reference source.   These units are configured with low noise internal regulation to reduce pushing, and output buffer amplifiers to reduce pulling.  These sources can be integrated with other multiplier and converter products into a single package.

Special integrated subassemblies and multi-function modules – For system designers looking to package a number of RF and microwave functions into a single enclosure, Norden can provide these solutions.  Such applications include missiles, test equipment, telecommunications equipment, EW systems, RADAR, and intercept receivers.  These multi-function assemblies may contain amplifiers, frequency multipliers and converters, frequency dividers, mixers, filters, variable attenuators, power dividers and combiners, diode switches and oscillators.  Please contact Norden’s sales department to discuss your requirements and schedule in detail.

Configuration and Assembly

Norden Converter assemblies are built using high precision thin film alumina micro circuitry with PHEMT GaAs MESFET MMIC and individual silicon devices as the active components. Assemblies use both high temperature die attach and epoxy mount. Interconnection of the components is completed with either gold wire or ribbon bonding. Sample destruct testing is performed on both attachment and bonding to insure compliance to the manufacturing process.  Final assembly is within an epoxy sealed machined package (or hermetically laser sealed depending on the customer needs).

Electrical Testing and Verification

Each individual unit is tested to insure compliance to the electrical specifications over the required environmental conditions.  A burn in of the unit is completed prior to final testing and shipping to insure product integrity. A test sheet for the unit is completed verifying testing and the associated results.

Process evaluation and verification of any new design implementation is performed using a detailed environmental test matrix that stresses the new design to insure integrity.  Implementation of new active or control devices requires a minimum 1000 hours operating burn in at the maximum operating temperature of those devices.
